Does Onion juice help in hair loss?

From just a humble kitchen staple to one of the major ingredients of every hair oil, nowadays, Onion Juice has become a 'new' remedy for hair loss. However, is this really true or just a new marketing funda of FMCGs companies? Let us know through this informative blog post.

Although onion is associated with several health benefits and it is being used for decades, still as a hair care remedy onion juice is something new.

There are several claims that now FMCG companies are making with respect to the benefits of onion juice for hair care -

  • itchy scalp

  • hair loss

  • dandruff

  • dry and brittle hair

  • premature greying of hair


Scientific studies say that applying onion juice to the scalp might help some people in hair regrowth. However, it is not effective in treating alopecia areata, which is a non-scarring, patchy form of hair loss.


Onion Juice improves the health of the hair due to the presence of dietary sulphur in it. This dietary sulphur provides necessary enzymes and proteins to the hair which gives nourishment to them. Additionally, it's anti-microbial properties helps to fight scalp infections. All these contribute towards the healthy scalp which makes strong hair follicles.

Onion Juice is also a good source of anti-oxidants which protects the body from the free radicals. Free Radicals contribute to the ageing process of a body and leads to premature greying of hair. Onion juice, with the help of anti-oxidants, reduces the damages caused to the hair follicles and thereby reduces the problem of premature greying of hair.


The process of applying onion juice on the scalp is simple. However, please remember, if you are allergic to onion, then please do not apply it on your scalp as it may lead to itchiness or sometimes make your scalp dry.

You can follow the following steps to prepare onion juice.


  1. Peel about 3 to 4 medium-sized onions and chop them into small pieces.

  2. Squeeze these pieces to extract the juice. You may take the help of a juicer.

  3. Collect the juice in a bowl and apply it on your scalp with the help of your fingertips.

  • A direct application of Onion Juice can cause redness and itching of the scalp. Do a patch test before you apply this to your scalp. It should not cause any significant itching to the scalp if you are not allergic to onions.

  • It may not be effective for every hair problem like dandruff or dull hair.

  • If onion juice does not show you any noticeable result, be assured, it will not damage your existing har too.


As scientific studies based on the effectiveness of the onion juice on hair are limited, it cannot be concluded as the best remedy for the hair fall problem. However, it is not a bad option to try as well.
